5TH ANNUAL SHRED FEST
Your identity should be one of your main concerns. Each year, thousands of people fall victim to identity thieves. Identity thieves are coming up with more ingenuous and subtle ways of obtaining vital information to steal your identity. Be proactive about protecting yourself! By taking small steps and engaging in common sense acts, you can reduce your risk of identity theft.
One way, and perhaps the easiest way to help prevent identity theft is to shred personal papers such as old bank statements, pay stubs, credit card applications and bills, and any paper with personal identifying information such as your name, address, social security number, and date of birth.
To help with this, New York City is sponsoring the 5th Annual Shred Fest, where you can shred your personal papers for free. As an added bonus, Staples is giving free paper shredders to the first 4 people to arrive with their papers at each location.
Shred Fest will be held on Sunday, May 20, 2012 from 10 AM to 4 PM at various locations throughout the city. Call 311 or visit www.nyc.gov and search “shredfest” for more information. In Brooklyn, you can attend one of the 4 locations: Bensonhurst Park (Cropsey Avenue and Bay 29th Street), Cadman Plaza (Cadman Plaza West; opposite Clark Street); Flatbush Nostrand Junction (near the corner of Flatbush Avenue and Hilel Place—next to Municipal Credit Union); and Prospect Park (Prospect Park West and 3rd Street).

ILLEGAL DUMPING AWARD PROGRAM
The NYC Dept. of Sanitation offers rewards for those that assist with catching illegal dumpers. If you observe a vehicle participating in illegal dumping, do not let your presence be known or touch the material that is dumped. Report the vehicle that is being used to cart the material, not the individuals. Record vital information such as license plate numbers, vehicle description, nature and quantity of material dumped, time, date, and location of the occurrence.
After recording the information, file a citizen complaint form with the Sanitation Police. You can request a citizen complaint form by calling 311 or by contacting your local community board.
