Town Hall Meeting

 

 

Join School District 17's Community Education Council for a Town Hall Meeting with NYC Department of Education School's Chancellor Dennis Walcott on Tuesday, May 8, 2012 at MS 002 - Auditorium located at 655 Parkside Avenue, Brooklyn, N.Y. at 6:00 p.m.

 

The Chancellor will discuss student achievement, school finances, and the City's educational goals and priorities.

 

There will be an opportunity for questions from the public.

 

 

Free Job Training in Woodworking!

Brooklyn Woods trains individuals in the basics of woodworking, preparing them for entry-level jobs in woodworking and related fields. Upon successful completion of the program job placement assistance is provided.  
 
This free 7-week, full time training course (Mon-Fri from 8 AM to 4 PM) includes instruction in: 
  • The proper use of hand tools, power tools and woodworking machinery 
  • An introduction to finishing and sanding, veneering, wood identification, and reading shop drawings
  • How to cut, machine, sand and assemble a cabinet 
  • Shop math and measurment
  • Comprehensive safety training including a 10-hour OSHA course 
  • Soft skills training to aid in getting and keeping employment 
  • Job placement assistance (for successful graduates) 

 

Minimum Requirements

To be Eligible Applicants MUST:

  • Have minimal or some experience working in wood or as a laborer, in a trade or working with your hands
  • Have a strong interest to work in woodworking or a related field as a career
  • Be unemployed or underemployed 
  • Be able to attend class Monday-Friday from 8 AM to 4 PM for 7 weeks
  • Be 21 years or older
  • Resident of NYC; Eligible to work in the U.S.
  • Be physically fit/able to life 70 lbs. 
  • Pass an 8th grade reading test and 6th grade math test 
Those receiving public assistance, including food stamps, and individuals with criminal backgrounds are welcome to apply.
Brooklyn Woods is a program of Brooklyn Workforce Innovations (BWI)

Car drivers: please note that street parking is extremely difficult to find on 8th street and the surrounding blocks.

West Indian American Day Carnival Association presents a 7 week Caribbean Cultural Workshop

 

Starting Saturday, May 12 thru Saturday, June 30 (except May 26th) the West Indian American Day Carnival Association (W.I.A.D.C.A.) will present a 7 week Caribbean Cultural Workshop for Ages 6+ at the Brooklyn Children's Museum located at 145 Brooklyn Avenue, Brooklyn, N.Y.
