The New York City Office of Adult and Continuing Education (OACE) is the largest provider of adult literacy education services in the state. They are an integral part of the New York City Department of Education’s District 79 – Alternative Schools and Programs.
They offer over 900 classes for adults age 21 and over. They operate four Adult Learning Centers located in Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, and the Bronx. They offer day and evening classes Monday through Saturday at more than 175 sites in all five boroughs, including public schools, community centers and faith-based organizations. Students can take classes at any of the sites, regardless of which borough they live in. All classes are taught by certified teachers and are offered free of charge.
Ongoing registration for classes in Adult Basic Education, High School Equivalency (GED), English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) and Career and Technical Education (CTE) is held regularly at schools and offices around the city.
The Office of Adult and Continuing Education’s mission is to empower adults in their roles as parents, family members, workers and community members. They promote lifelong learning and the development of problem solving skills through a continuum of services, including Adult Basic Education, English for Speakers of Other Languages, High School Equivalency, and Career and Technical Education.

Brooklyn Public Library is offering High School Equivalency (HSE) Free PreGED classes for anyone 17 years and older. Begin your High School Equivalency preparation at the Library. Adult Education GED classes for individuals 21 and older are being provided at the St. John’s Place Family Center located at 1604 St. John’s Place (between Buffalo and Ralph Avenues). Classes are held Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 9 AM to 12:15 PM.
If you are interested in registering for classes, please go to 1604 St. John’s Place on any day classes are held at 9 AM and bring a valid identification.

Adult Education
Family Dynamics provides adults in the community the opportunity to learn a variety of skills through its New Horizon Program. New Horizon’s focus is to break the cycle of poverty by offering a comprehensive educational program for adults. With the help of a network of teachers, counselors and administrators, students grow in self-sufficiency, confidence, and self-esteem. New Horizons offers day and evening classes that are open to adults of all ages in the community.
